Direct Instruction During PowerPoint presentation, students will record the
name, use, and specific examples of rhetorical and figurative devices from JFK’s
speech, in the graphic organizer. Teacher will check for corrections by walking
around during class.
Concept Development Students will get into groups be given slips
of paper containing different phrases of JFK’s speech, and the lyrics to each
song. There will be two examples
of figurative language, two examples of rhetorical language, and one false
example. Students will use graphic organizer to identify each example, and then
discuss how each example might be used, and what it may mean.
Inquiry Students will inspect the characteristics of an effective speech—both
how it is written and how it is delivered—by researching speech-writingwebsites. From these pages,
they will fill out a gragpic organizer, and the then create their own rubric
for evaluating the two speeches as excellent, average, or poor.
Cooperative LearningStudents will get into groups and write 2 examples of
figurative language and 2 rhetorical devices to be used in speech. Student will
write 2 to 4 contemptible examples to be used in speech as well.Students will construct a presidential speech using
the zinger lines allotted to them by the other groups. The speeches will be
graded on a rubric that they created previously. Students will create a poster and name plate.
Socratic Seminar Students will answers at least three questions, and
respond to three other student responses. The answers will focus on the work
that is done by literary devices, and the overall impact of JFK’s speech. Students will show patience and openness to different
ideas, ask for clarification when needed, move conversation forward, address
comments of all participants that answer questions, and not speak too much.
The following rubric is an example of what the students should create during their inquiry lesson. The rubrics they build will be used to assess the speech they write for the Cooperative Learning Lesson.
This graphic organizer will be used as an exit slip.
This will be a test I give out at the end of the Unit. Answers are in bold.
